The Back Nine

FLAG10-O.GIF (704 bytes) hole10.jpg (21331 bytes)     This is a fair but tough par 3 hole. The elevated green and the fact that you usually play this hole into the wind, make the tee shot play longer than the yardage. Stay out of the pond, short and left of the green and the trap on the front right of the green and you have a chance to get off to a good start. A high ridge runs from left to right across the upper third of the green. A fade started at the left front will keep you below the hole. Try to stay left and away from the fairly deep trap on the right. If you draw the ball, use plenty of club. More pars can be made from the front left of the green than the back or right side of the green.

FLAG11-O.GIF (671 bytes) hole11.jpg (22347 bytes)     This is a good birdie hole-straight away with a wide fairway and a big smooth green. Your tee shot should be played left center to catch the down slope in the fairway giving you more roll. This green holds approach shots well most of the year. Try to land your shot 10 to 15 feet in front of the pin and you should have an excellent putt for a birdie.

FLAG12-O.GIF (686 bytes) hole12.jpg (24653 bytes)     This short par 4 is a shotmakers hole. Placement and finesse can make this a birdie hole. It favors the high ball golfer, and the smallish elevated green makes the hole play tougher than it looks. Play your tee shot just slightly left of the center to get the best approach angle to the pin. The elevated green makes your approach shot play a half club longer. Don't be short. The two deep bunkers that guard both sides of the green are difficult up and downs, and the green holds well so there is no need to be short.

FLAG13-O.GIF (684 bytes) hole13.jpg (22117 bytes)     This long straightaway Par 4 is as difficult as it is beautiful. If you can drive the ball straight, do it here. The mountain behind the green is a sensation in color in the fall. Use your straightest wood or longest straight iron for your tee shot to send your tee shot down the narrow throat that is the landing area. There is out of bounds down the right side and a penalty drainage ditch down the left side starting 200 yards from the green and 230 yards from the tee. A dip in front of the green makes the second shot look shorter than it is. Try to land your approach shot just on the front edge of the green and the ball will scoot onto the green. Shots hit onto the green will usually hold but over the green is very difficult. Par is a great score here.

FLAG14-O.GIF (692 bytes) hole14.jpg (23129 bytes)     This is a wonderful Par 5 hole. It is a true birdie or even eagle opportunity for the long hitters and a holy terror for all the others. This hole probably has more trouble than any other hole on the course. It is 320 yards straightaway to a sizable water hazard, the McMichaels Creek, then a twelve foot embankment on the far side or green side of the creek. This elevation makes the second shot play much longer. A large deep trap on the left of the green and out of bounds on the right, make this a tough hole. Try to drive the ball down the right center of the fairway if you can, avoiding the woods on the right. Now it's decision time. Can you go over the creek and it's embankment in two shots? For long hitters, this is not a problem. Once over the creek, your approach shots need to land on the front 1/3 to 1/2 of the green as this green tends to get firm and the ball will release. A steep grass bunker over the green can kill your chance for a par, so don't go long. Good luck. This is an exciting hole where good scores are cherished.

FLAG15-O.GIF (679 bytes) hole15.JPG (35589 bytes)     This straightaway par 4 plays as tough as it looks for the average player, and is a strong test of the golf skills for the good player. Your tee shot must carry 160 yards over the McMichaels Creek to reach the fairway. The prevailing wind is against you so if you can hit a low draw this would be the time to do so. Your approach shot is to a small elevated green protected by three traps on the front and sides and a penalty ditch is in back of the putting surface. Add a few yards for your approach shot because of the elevated green and the wind in your face. Many players will have to lay up short of the yawning trap guarding the entire front of the green on their second shot. This U S open style par 4 will test all your golf ability. A par 4 is cherished. Good luck.

FLAG16-O.GIF (698 bytes) hole16.jpg (16754 bytes)     Welcome to the "Airplane Hole". Only playing 126 yards from the center of the tee to the center of the green, you must hit from an elevated tee to an elevated green. The only way to get to the green is by flight. You won't roll this one on the green. The hole plays 1/2 to 1 club longer than it looks because the green is slightly elevated and you are into the prevailing wind. The two tiered green holds well so take enough club. You can bail out to the right but there is a trap to snag the ball. Disaster is long and left and could put you in a drainage ditch or with a severe uphill blind second or third shot. It is a fun par 3 where you can make a 2 or 3 or 6 real fast.

FLAG17-O.GIF (662 bytes) hole17.jpg (18541 bytes)     This is a fairly long straightaway Par 5. You can let out the shaft on your drive and you should try to favor the left center of the fairway. For long hitters, the green is reachable in two. Aim center or slightly left of center and your ball will receive a favorable bounce towards the putting surface. The second shot almost always plays downwind and is only 215 yards from the crest of the hill. The major danger is a second shot that strays to the right where your ball will be gobbled up by huge deep sand trap with a twelve foot embankment to the green. This is a true birdie hole for the men and a good break from the tough holes that precede it.

FLAG18-O.GIF (694 bytes) hole18.jpg (20109 bytes)     From the championship tee, this is one of the best holes you will ever see. It is a beautiful tee shot filled with peril. Your tee shot from this elevated tee must carry 200 yards to reach the fairway over a swamp on the right and a pond on the left. Out of bounds exists down the entire right hand side and seems to be a magnet for slicers. A good tee shot to the left center of the fairway opens up the birdie doors. The green slopes severely from the back to front and the approach plays uphill 1/2 to 1 club longer. Threes and fours are common, but so are sevens and eights.
